Educating

A look inside the book

My Memoir

This book is my memoir—a memoir that for several years now, I have known I would one day write. But let’s set the record straight right here. Part, but only part, of the impetus for writing my memoir at this time, is the publishing of our daughter’s book, Educated.

I want to tell the story of my life as I really lived it.  I want my grandchildren to know who their grandmother is and was, and I want to be a force for good in their lives. Also, I feel a compelling desire to shine a light of accuracy on homeschooling, herbal medicine, and the living of a conservative and Christian way of life.

Self-Publishing

There are significant differences between self-publishing a book and submitting a manuscript to a publisher. One important difference is that when an author signs with a publisher, the author may be relinquishing at least some control over the content of their book. Final editorial decisions often rest with the publisher, even if those decisions are contrary to the author’s wishes. The motivations of the author and publisher may not always be aligned.

My Dream

The educational changes being implemented as a result of Covid-19 are changing perspectives on education. Parents everywhere are now carrying more of the responsibility of educating their children, and they are discovering how challenging—and how rewarding—it is to interact with your children in this way day in and day out. I see parents having the same desires for their children’s educations that we had in our day.

I also see a great deal of frustration as families try to ascertain what will work best for them. I tell these harried parents that temporarily filling in for the teacher is not the same as settling into homeschooling as a way of life, and that it will get easier as they proceed. I feel a great deal of admiration for them as they take it on, adjusting and making the best of challenging situations.

I hope that this book will in some small way be encouraging to those struggling to pioneer a new way of educating their children.

About the Author

LaRee Westover was born in southeastern Idaho and attended public schools and Brigham Young University. She was blessed with an inquisitive mind, and stories about her early childhood often end with her having said, “I can do it myself!” She and her husband, Val, are the parents of two girls and five boys, all of whom were homeschooled. Six went on to receive more formal education, and three earned PhD degrees. Her family, which now includes 36 grandchildren, is the joy of her life. LaRee prepared extensively and worked as a midwife for several years. She has published four books on homeopathic remedies, herbal remedies, and essential oils for the multimillion-dollar business, Butterfly Express. As an incorrigible optimist and consummate hard worker, LaRee continues to share her knowledge and experience by teaching classes about alternative healthcare modalities. She is an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and lives with her husband of over 45 years in Clifton, Idaho.

I came here after reading this enlightening piece, I AM BLOWN AWAY. We must spread this work to emancipate people around this kingdom of god! May we see the light of Christ in others constantly and help them see it in themselves. – Elder Bragg

What I love about this book is how realistic it is. Real families do the very best they can and make mistakes and most shouldn’t be characterized entirely by pain and mistake OR by joy and success. It’s wonderful if you can look back at your upbringing and childhood and remember only joy and success, but I think that comes with a degree of charitable forgetfulness because no child had a perfect upbringing. I realize that there are layers of difficulty and levels of harm and some things are a lot harder to overcome than others, but most families true picture is a mixture of failures and successes and the parents involved are humans who are doing - for the most part- their best. I also love how LaRee continues to express her love and hope for her daughter. No one is perfect here and no one is the villain, everyone is human and their lives are a mixture of success and failure. I hope I’m aimed at success, but I know failure is a part of the experience of life- unfortunately that means that some of my failure impacts those I love. Darn it! But that is what makes me want to do better. The other thing I LOVED was the determination to be accountable in each situation, to take up the crisis and disaster that faced them and learn whatever necessary to heal and move forward in the best possible way.

I was privileged to learn from LaRee’s vast knowledge and had heard many of the stories she shares in her book. But as I read these stories and more of the background to them I was touched by everything she went through to gain her knowledge. If you read this book with the intent of LaRee bashing her daughter you won’t find it. This is a book about LaRee’s life which I found to be genuine and heart-wrenching at times. Brought smiles and tears. You’ll want to read this book!

I received some things from a great teacher. I loved, loved, LOVED the book. I appreciated getting to know her. I appreciated her sharing this and I really, really feel that a lot of the trials they went though was to teach things that she is teaching me now! We are blessed to have known her/ her family/ and her company.

After reading this book I was under the inital impression that it was going to be a great alternative to modern medicine. However I did not expect it to be so honest and truthful. There was no hype up or anyother cap instilled in the writing. I am 100% sure Mrs. Westover can even cure Ligma and Cancer if the person in question has enough faith.

This was an amazing read! It was well written and not at all made to sound anti medical establishment or public school. It was eye opening to realize that people can and still do take care of things that are 'improbable' and even 'impossible' with nature. WOW. The author puts her life choices into perspective and I am right along with her and Val. They are amazing people and raised amazing kids (except the one that turned to academia for fame and fortune and made a lot of homeschool look like tripe) My own family bought her book and believed every word. Its very telling how much people trust a system built around MA, PHD, MD etc. instead of thinking for themselves. Needless to say, it was a profound pleasure to actually do some "Educating" in my own family on reality. My heart goes out to LaRee and Val and family and all the nasty publicity their own family gives them. Amazon reviews are not flattering and her daughters book has so many academic people cheering false narratives around that it makes me sick.(But really, it seems that is the new narrative our country is going with mainstream media and education system. Tara Westover is part of that system) This book is worth buying and reading over and over again. If you have ears to hear you will and eyes to see, you will see that this book is worth putting on the bookshelf when space is limited. Thank you for writing this and not leaving just one side out there to molder and fester falsehood.

My surname is Westover and I’m often asked if I know Tara Westover’s family. Some find me on social media; others meet me in the course of everyday life. Many are captivated by Tara’s spectacularly successful book ‘Educated.’ Others see in Tara’s mother the possibility of finding healing from ailments beyond their doctors’ abilities. All of them want to know more of the story. LaRee’s book, ‘Educating,’ is that additional information. I enjoyed reading this tale of thrilling highs and lows, and it is very worth the read. Some might feel that this book is written in response to Tara’s disparaging remarks in ‘Educated.’ I didn’t feel that. LaRee begins with her childhood and describes the people and events that shaped her life. Most of the book covers events previously unknown to Tara and not mentioned in ‘Educated.’ This is LaRee’s story, the tale of a person who decides what is essential in her life and sticks to it regardless of the attacks that always come to one who dares to blaze her own path. LaRee is genuine in recounting her experience and doesn’t shy away from sharing her perspective and beliefs regardless of how others might judge her. I see my own path more clearly after having read it. She shares photographs and extensive excerpts from her diaries, as well as firsthand accounts from others close to the events as they unfold. I highly recommend this book.
